Five people were hurt in a vehicle crash Thursday evening on the southwestern edge of Cedar Rapids, including a woman who had “very serious” injuries, police said.

Police were dispatched around 8:20 p.m. to a two-vehicle accident at the corner of Edgewood Road and 76th Avenue SW.

Police said a car driven by a 50-year-old woman was southbound on Edgewood Road SW when it collided with an SUV driven by a 50-year-old woman that had been westbound on 76th Avenue SW. The crash sent one vehicle into the ditch and the other into a farm field. Both drivers were injured, along with three passengers in the car – a 50-year-old man, a 21-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman.

The car’s driver was taken to Mercy Medical Center and later transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City with “very serious” injuries, police said. The car’s passengers also were taken to Mercy for treatment. The driver of the SUV was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital.

Names of the people involved were not immediately released.

The driver of the SUV would have had a stop sign at the intersection. Police said no charges have been filed at this time, and an investigation was continuing.
