Funeral services will be held Monday morning in Tama for a South Tama Middle School student and cross-country runner who died Tuesday after an accident west of Tama.

Services for Ian McFate, 13, are set for 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama, according to an obituary submitted to The Gazette Wednesday. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, also at the church.

McFate was training with his cross-country team about 4:50 p.m. Monday on the Tama-Toledo Recreation Trail when he was hit by a car while crossing Highway E49, authorities reported.

A 30-year-old Montour man identified as Timothy Nunnikhoven was driving the 2000 Honda Accord that hit McFate while heading west on Highway E49, according to the Iowa State Patrol. Neither Nunnikhoven nor his passengers were injured in the collision, authorities reported.

The State Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash, and it’s unknown at this time whether Nunnikhoven will face charges.
