The Iowa Valley Food Co-op, which offers online ordering of local foods, is moving its distribution site this month. Here is more information from the co-op:
CEDAR RAPIDS – After a successful first year of operations, Iowa Valley Food Co-op (IVFC) is pleased to announce a move to a new, larger location at 225 K Ave. NW Suite G, Cedar Rapids, IA 52405. The move is expected to take place in early October.
After the move IVFC will share space with Matthew 25, an independent nonprofit organization that works in Cedar Rapids’ west side neighborhoods. “Matthew 25 has been very supportive of our work to expand the sale of fresh, fairly priced, and sustainably produced food. We look forward to expanding our partnership with them after the move,” stated Jesse Singerman, IVFC Co-coordinator.
IVFC is a direct-to-consumer cooperative of producer and consumer members in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area. IVFC uses a web-based system that assists consumers in ordering products from area farmers and other local businesses. IVFC acts as a facilitator, providing a marketplace for all types of local producers, processing orders and payments, and facilitating delivery to consumer members.
IVFC opened in August 2011 at First Presbyterian Church on Fifth St. SE in downtown Cedar Rapids. “We grew tremendously in our first year and we’ve simply outgrown our space at the church. We need more room for refrigeration and freezers to serve our growing membership. We’ll always be grateful to First Presbyterian for giving us a great start,” stated Scott Koepke, President of IVFC’s Board of Directors.
Independent producers creating fresh local products are the heart of the local food movement. Iowa Valley Food Co-op (IVFC) works to increase the amount of local food bought and sold in the region by bringing together local consumers with local food producers. IVFC is an innovative and creative marketing effort that takes advantage of two of today’s fastest growing trends in grocery sales, online ordering and local food.
Consumer members can select from hundreds of items every month. Items offered for sale change monthly with the growing season. Seasonal vegetables and fruits, eggs, beef, pork, lamb, chicken, chevron, baked goods, frozen custard and coffee along with a variety of locally made non-food items are regular offerings. Currently the co-op operates once a month from a central location in Cedar Rapids.
