$202 million Powerball ticket sold in Bondurant, officials say

UPDATE: Someone bought a Powerball ticket worth $202.1 million at a Casey's General Store service station in the small town of Bondurant for what Iowa Lottery officials called “the winningest night ever.”

Aside from the Powerball Jackpot, someone purchased a ticket worth $1 million in Williamsburg and someone picked up a Powerball ticket worth $10,000 in Hiawatha. Additionally, someone who bought a ticket in the $100,000 Cash Game in Fort Madison won the top prize.

“People have been saying ‘Is there something wrong? Was there something wrong with the drawings last night that we'd have all these hit in Iowa?' ” Lottery spokeswoman Mary Neubauer said at a news conference Thursday in front of the Bondurant Casey's, where the jackpot ticket was sold.

“We've run our security checks that we always run and everything is fine, it's just that Iowa had an incredible run of luck last night,” Neubauer said.

Bo Knop, an area supervisor who oversees the Casey's that sold the jackpot ticket, said the store sells about $200 worth of Powerball tickets a day on average. He said the store serves locals from Bondurant and the nearby communities of Ankeny and Newton. Also it's located just off U.S. 65, so the ticket could have been bought by someone who lives much farther away.

“We've already had people calling to check numbers,” Knop said. So far, there haven't been any hits. The store will get $10,000 for selling the winning ticket.

The ticketholder can choose to be paid the full $202.1 million in installments over 30 years, with 25 percent federal withholding and 5 percent state tax on each payment.

The lump sum option of $129.8 million would be worth $90.9 million after federal and state taxes.

Neubauer said Lottery officials know the date and time the ticket was sold, but that isn't being made public until the ticket is turned in as part of the security measures the Lottery has in place.

She said jackpot winners typically take some time to “get their ducks in a row” before stepping forward to claim their prize.

In the meantime, the Bondurant store will display a large, fake Iowa Lottery check made out to “Is it you?”
