Frank Deford was in Iowa City last weekend to continue work on a piece for HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” that will air in mid-October.

Deford’s story is on Caroline Found, the Iowa City West volleyball player who died in August 2011 in a moped accident, and how Found’s spirit stayed with the West High team as it repeated as state-champions last November.

Deford is, of course, one of America’s most renowned sports writers as well as an accomplished novelist, broadcaster on “Real Sports,” and commentator for National Public Radio. He generously spent some time recently with me to discuss how he learned of the Found/West story, and why he immediately thought it would be compelling for a national audience.

Much thanks to Frank for being so welcoming and gracious to us. We’ll have more video from the interview as this “Real Sports” segment approaches its air-date next month.

An aside: In my introduction I erred on the timeline of Found’s accident. My apologies.
