Residents of the North Liberty Living Center will raise a flag to commemorate the 11th anniversary of September 11.

The building opened one year ago and until now, the facility has never had a flag. Seniors living at the Living Center were quick to change that.

“I think that’s one of the first things I thought about when I moved here is there should be a flag out front, so we started a petition and we talked about it and finally it has come true and I’m very thankful for that,” said Living Center resident and U.S. Navy veteran Max Colbert.

“My husband and I had donated the flag last year and it was never put up,” said resident Wanda Baird.

Recently the flag pole came in. Crews put it in the ground, and managers realized they needed to hold a flag dedication ceremony. They said the 9/11 anniversary was the perfect day to raise the flag for the first time and hold a bigger ceremony for the public.

Baird and Living Center manager Karen Davis pulled together a full afternoon of events.

“I said let’s just go full blast with the whole thing and that’s how we got it started. The two of us are just working really hard to get it going, and I think it’s going to be a real big success and I hope that the public all comes out and remembers 9/11,” Baird said.

“We thought 9/11 was the good day to honor our veterans in our building and in the community too,” Davis added.

The flag raising ceremony and dedication will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the North Liberty Living Center, 410 Ashley Court. The ceremony includes a visit from members of the National Guard, speeches and a prayer for 9/11 victims.
