Breastfeeding challenge set for Thomas Park in Marion

Group says breastfeeding should be more accepted within the community

MARION – The 2012 Global Breastfeeding Challenge is scheduled for Sept. 29 at Thomas Park in Marion.

Latch and count is at 11 a.m.

The purpose is to raise awareness that breastfeeding should be more accepted within the community.

This is the third year for the event, part of the Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge, and is the only organized challenge this year in Iowa.

According to the World Health Organization, breast-feeding reduces infant mortality and has health benefits that extend into adulthood.

The group recommends exclusive breast-feeding for the first six months of life, followed by continued breast-feeding with appropriate complementary foods for up to two years or beyond.
