Car hits horse in Buchanan County; woman hurt

Horse died in crash after wandering onto roadway

A woman was injured when the car she was driving struck a horse Tuesday evening on a highway near Hazelton.

According to the Buchanan County sheriff’s office, a car driven by Lydia Danehy was southbound on Highway 150 around 9:30 p.m. when she hit a horse that had wandered onto the roadway near Bryantsville Boulevard. Emergency responders pulled Danehy from the wreckage, but authorities said her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Danehy was taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Oelwein. The horse died as a result of the crash.

Authorities were still investigating the crash.
