HEALTHIER EATS: A Gazette report on Thursday indicated area school cafeterias are offering more kinds of healthy foods for students at lunchtime. Federal nutrition guidelines kicking in this fall are driving some of the changes but many schools had already started improving the meal choices. Over time, let’s hope students embrace the healthier fare, which in turn could help reverse the obesity epidemic among our youth. Parental reinforcement and modeling of better eating habits will be a key, too, of course.
AIRPORT BUSIER: Thanks in part to additional flights added for Atlanta and Denver destinations, passenger traffic is increasing at The Eastern Iowa Airport. The numbers were up 15 percent in July compared to the same month the previous year, while traffic is up 12.9 percent for the year to date. A number of improvements in the terminal have or are being made that will add to passenger convenience and security.
RELATIVELY ‘CHEAP’: Gas prices got you down? Well, in Norway, the average price per gallon for premium in late July was $10.12; the U.S. price of $3.75 ranked 49th of 60 nations survey.
