With Marion being one of the fastest growing communities in the state, event organizers selected “Expanding Our Vision” as the theme for the 23rd annual Swamp Fox Festival, the celebration of Marion’s past and present. The festival will take place Sept. 14-16, 2012.
“This year’s theme reflects the growth, development and investment happening throughout the city,” said Karlene Hummel, Recreation and Aquatics Coordinator for the City of Marion and chair of the organizing committee. “Expanding Our Vision also applies to our youth and the important role education plays in shaping the future of our community.”
With that in mind, Swamp Fox Festival organizers selected Katie Mulholland, superintendent of Linn-Mar Community School District and Sarah Pinion, superintendent of Marion Independent School District as grand marshals for the community parade on Sept. 15.
Both are proud to be part of the Marion community and appreciate the focus on family and family activities.
“Marion is a unique community whose heritage brings in the traditions of the past while celebrating its growth into the future” said Mulholland. “The blend creates both a sense of belonging and opportunity.”
Pinion agreed. “Marion really offers the best of both worlds. It has the small town camaraderie where people know one another and care about each other. It also provides access the cultural opportunities typically found in metropolitan communities.”
Mulholland has served as superintendent of schools for the Linn-Mar Community School District since 2003. Pinion is beginning her fourth year as superintendent of Marion Independent School District.
Both districts have experienced growth as the community has grown. And both are committed to providing today’s youth and future generations with a strong educational foundation.
“At Linn-Mar our mission is to inspire learning, unlock potential and empower achievement,” said Mulholland.
Similarly, the focus at Marion Independent “is unleashing each child’s full potential,” said Pinion. “We want our students to be well prepared for their career and future learning.”
The leadership and presence of these school districts contributes to a bright future for Marion; one committed to “Expanding Our Vision.”
