The Big Ten Network live tweeted Iowa morning practice on Wednesday. That’s good, this is information for all of us.
We’re going to stick with Dave Revsine for the bulk of this. He has the quickest thumbs of the “Big Ten Football Preview Tour,” which also includes analysts Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith.
You can see this 60-minute, on-site preview show of the Hawkeyes 9 PM CT Thursday night. Subsequent shows will air nightly at 9 PM CT.
Hawks going inside today due to rain. My first look at new facility. Suffice to say it is an improvement on the bubble dome.
Translation: The Bubble outlived its usefulness. Kind of like saddle shoes.
Blackened catfish: Farm raised catfish , andouille sausage jambalaya, buttermilk coleslaw.
Translation: Iowa’s front four on defense or an entre from Atlas?
Just spoke w Erik Campbell – says Don Shumpert has really emerged. Doesn’t think RB issue will impact offensive philosophy.
Translation: We start our position features on the 19th. Part of that will be going through the wide receivers. Shumpert is a junior looking for his first career reception. I asked him about that. Suffice to say, he’s a hungry young man.
Blythe lining up with 1st group at RG – Bullock 1st RB to get a carry as they go through plays.
Translation: Right guard is Blythe’s job to lose and he’s got it in a safe with a GPS attached. He’s not going anywhere.
Iowa people say Alvis & Davis have been doing everything in practice as they come back from injuries. Good news -DL needs
Translation: Iowa needs Alvis and Davis. Water is wet. (No disrespect to Dave. Those two were injured in spring and that is a fair question. Iowa’s DL needs are apparent.)
FWIW Garmon has been rotating in 2nd among RB’s – then Hill. Garmon had a nice spin move a moment ago
Translation: This is chronological, so the RB tweets will clear up in a few tweets down. Still, what to make of Garmon? At some point, he is going to have to matter this season.
Hyde, Lowery, Law, Miller lining up as 1′s in secondary – Torrey Campbell came in as nickel and just had a nice PBU -
Translation: Again, within the chronology, you’ll see why Campbell was in before senior Greg Castillo.
Law just came up w really nice hit on Garmon. FWIW Donatell was in before Law in team – but was opposite in pass drills.
Translation: Nothing is nailed down at strong safety. Tommy Donatell isn’t out there to just get his letter. Could there be a rotation here?
Interesting to note – Hill has been in front of Garmon in team drills. Howard & Gerry both said they are impressed w Hill.
Translation: We anointed Barkley Hill the starter in this week’s podcast. [Runs back to edit "Barkley Hill is the starter" into the podcast. Kidding, but we really did say that. No inside info there, just following along and making an educated guess. Still, this is Day 6 and no RB is going to clear the field this quickly, especially a true freshman.]
Sean Draper has been rotating in w 2′s at corner. Have some good young DB’s – Howard likes Lile – great speed.
Translation: Hello, Ruben Lile. At 6-3, 200, we see you at safety. There is opportunity for a corner on the depth chart, with Jordan Lomax’s season over. Draper or Kevin Buford probably. Or, more likely, Torrey Campbell claims the spot.
DB’s – Castillo has a minor injury. Limited last 2 days (is dressed, though). So tough to say exactly what DB rotation is
Translation: There’s why the CB depth chart opened for Campbell to show his stuff this morning. He’s a redshirt freshman who ran indoor track for Iowa last winter.
Castillo injury is a hamstring. SID Steve Roe says he will be practicing tomorrow.
Translation: Hamstring injury, yuck.
Rudock is going to be a very good player down the line strong arm & accurate
Translation: Iowa very much wants Rudock to make strides so juco Cody Sokol can redshirt. Or maybe not. Maybe they want super-charged competition for No. 2. That might make more sense, with no No. 2 candidate every having thrown a pass in FBS football. Backup QBs need to feel some heat this camp. They have to be ready.
Just finished up interviews – Davis on CJF – “Sometimes he’s open even when he’s covered.” getting set to shoot rest of show – then Lincoln.
Translation: C.J. Fiedorowicz is tall.
You can catch the show Thursday at 9 p.m. on BTN (channel 610 on DirecTV and that’s the only one I know).
Also, Iowa’s open scrimmage is Saturday at Kinnick Stadium. Gates open at 11 a.m.
