Two rookies from Iowa are on the Washington Redskins, and both were subjects Monday for Redskins beat writer Mike Jones of the Washington Post.

I’m just excerpting. You should click on the aforementioned link to get Jones’ full statements about Adam Gettis, a fifth-round draft pick, and Jordan Bernstine.

Adam Gettis (AP photo)

●(Offensive lineman Adam) Gettis has actually showed improvement in one-on-one drills. … Although his team lacks veteran backups, Mike Shanahan believes that Gettis is an addition that has improved the depth of the line.

● … Jordan Bernstine … whom the Redskins drafted in the seventh round … Redskins secondary coach Raheem Morris thinks highly of him. Morris said today that Bernstine is learning both free and strong safety, but is handling the heavy load well.

Anwar Richardson of mlive.com liked what he saw from Detroit Lions first-round pick Riley Reiff of Iowa on Monday.

Rookie tackle Riley Reiff showed he has the ability to “crack” opponents during practice. Reiff laid an incredibly strong hit on defensive end Ronnell Lewis, plus dominated several other players. He is starting to prove why he was a first-round pick.

For now, ex-Hawkeye Brandon Myers is the Oakland Raiders’ No. 1 tight end.

  1. Cool. Bummer about Shaun Prater, though. On IR for the year.

  2. Alex Gibbs thinks it takes 2-3 years to learn the zone blocking scheme that he and Shanahan used to great success in Denver. Iowa, however, has been running it since 1999, so Adam has five years with nothing else. Ferentz also moves guys around the line with impunity, so perhaps Gettis is simply a good fit for the Skins scheme.

    Remember, Jordan Bernstine can fly:

  3. Some of these players were lightly recruited in college and late draft picks, but they are impressing the NFL guys. Why doesn’t more highly regarded players go to Iowa? With Iowa’s track record for sending players to the NFL they should be paying to play at Iowa. The only reason I can see for players going elsewhere is that Iowa is all about WORK. The Iowa way has no shot cuts and easy tricks. Not all players want to work that hard. That being said, if I was an 4 star offensive lineman or defensive player I would be wanting to go check out Iowa. Seems word still isn’t out about Iowa’s success with the NFL. Why is that?
