CEDAR RAPIDS — Tatyana Kieler may be juggling schedules for a time, but she hopes to keep open her Hiawatha cafe at the same time she and other permanent vendors launch at the NewBo City Market in October.

The market on Tuesday announced its roster of 21 anchor merchants, the growers and food artisans who will take up permanent residence inside the market at 1100 Third St. SE.

“NewBo was looking for something different,” said Kieler, a native of Russia and the owner of Tatyana’s Coffee Shop & Cafe, 1725 Boyson Rd.

A mainstay at Cedar Rapids-area farmers markets for the past five years, Kieler plans to sell her popular Russian blini — crepes with savory fillings like mushrooms and potatoes, or sweet fruit such as apples and raspberries.

The blini will be made to order at the NewBo City Market, which is scheduled to open Oct. 27.

Kurt Friese, the market’s director of healthy food and advocacy, said more than 260 businesses applied for the anchor spots, which will operate year-round. He called the resulting list “a great effort by a great team.”

The lineup includes fresh produce, fish, meats, flowers, pasta, coffee, a bread baker, bulk herbs and spices, three pastry merchants, eight restaurants and more.

Basil Hadjis and his daughter, Katie Hadjis, will sell a selection of Greek food, such as spanakopita and gyros, that was offered at the Vernon Inn, the Cedar Rapids landmark that closed in May. Hadjis, who will leave day-to-day operations to his daughter, said they also hope to use produce and items offered by other vendors to create specialty sandwiches.

“We’re excited to be a part of this,” he said. “We think it’s a great thing for Cedar Rapids.”

Executive Director Ann Poe said the list is “99.9 percent” complete, adding that indoor space could be reconfigured to add other vendors.

“We have a good mix,” she said. “I am feeling really good about that.”

Poe and Friese both said none of the merchants indicated plans to close their other locations in Eastern Iowa.

“Our whole purpose is to build businesses, not tear them down,” Friese said.

Market officials are still looking for outdoor vendors to operate during warm weather. Interested merchants can apply through the NewBo City Market page at ManageMyMarket.com.
