CEDAR RAPIDS — An accident Wednesday at the General Mills plant in Cedar Rapids resulted in the death of an employee from a contract firm.

Emergency responders were dispatched around 3:15 p.m. to the plant at 4800 Edgewood Rd. SW for a report of a traumatic injury. A caller indicated a man was trapped between a piece of machinery and a safety post, said Greg Buelow, spokesman for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department.

Police identified the victim as Kyriakos Korovilas, 66, of Cedar Rapids. He was taken to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, where he was pronounced dead.

Officials with General Mills are releasing few details about Korovilas or the accident, but they said an investigation is under way.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of this long-time employee of one of our leading contract firms,” Bridget Christenson, a corporate public relations representative from the company, wrote in an email to The Gazette.
