Matt Gatens scores 3 points in summer league opener

Iowa City native and former Iowa guard Matt Gatens scored three points for the Phoenix Suns’ summer-league team today in Las Vegas.

Gatens, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, played 2 minutes, 51 seconds in the Suns’ 99-74 win against the Knicks. Gatens hit 1-of-2 shots — one of which was a 3-pointer — and grabbed one rebound. Former Iowa State point guard Diante Garrett scored eight points and 10 assists in 26 minutes for the Suns.

The Suns’ next game is at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against the Cavaliers.
