For the fifth time since 2006, Mercy Medical Center is being recognized as one of the nation’s MOST WIRED hospitals, according to the results of the 2012 Most Wired Survey released this week in the July issue of Hospitals & Health Networks (H&HN) magazine, a trade publication published by the American Hospital Association. Just seven of Iowa’s hospital systems are represented in the 2012 Most Wired Survey.
The nation’s Most Wired hospitals are recognized for making progress towards greater health information technology (IT) adoption. This recognition is based on technology advancements made by organizations to enhance patient safety, clinical quality and customer service in healthcare centers.
The nation’s Most Wired hospitals have demonstrated better outcomes in four key areas—infrastructure, business and administrative management, clinical quality and safety, and clinical integration.
“Mercy understands the importance of health information technology, and is committed to continual progress by utilizing our technology investments to enhance patient care delivery,” said Jeff Cash, Sr. Vice President and CIO at Mercy. “We continually monitor our efforts and look for ways to enhance our systems through education, communication and collaboration. This recognition as one of the Most Wired hospitals in 2012 is certainly not just an IT award, but is a credit to our entire team of caregivers. Mercy’s IT initiatives are always aimed at bringing better healthcare to our community.”
Timothy Quinn, MD, President of MercyCare Community Physicians, offers this perspective, “Technology has transformed how we see patients, and will continue to impact how we deliver care, reduce duplication, and lower costs. As a result, patients have an improved experience and new avenues for communication with their physician. As clinicians, we are better able to coordinate care across the health care spectrum; within our large network of providers effective communication wouldn’t be possible without technology.”
Mercy and MercyCare Community Physician clinics system have recently made the investment and begun implementation of a new electronic patient management system, called Epic. This system will have a positive impact on the organization’s ability to offer a more seamless delivery of care for patients. Epic allows integration of multiple information systems at various points of contact into a single patient record through the most advanced medical record system available.
Hospitals & Health Networks’ Most Wired Survey, conducted earlier this year, asked hospitals and health systems nationwide to answer questions regarding their IT initiatives.
Mercy will be among the Most Wired winners to be recognized for this accomplishment at an awards ceremony in San Francisco later this month.
