CEDAR RAPIDS — Hayley Deutmeyer’s bedroom got a little more crowded.

Deutmeyer hit her first career home run, highlighting a balanced and potent attack, as Cedar Rapids Xavier pasted Dubuque Wahlert, 14-3, in a Class 4A softball regional semifinal Saturday night at Bob Erusha Field.

“There’s nothing like hitting your first career home run,” Deutmeyer beamed after the Saints (24-17) racked up 15 hits. “This one’s going above my bed.”

Xavier advances to face No. 1 Clear Creek Amana (40-1) in a regional final Tuesday at Oxford. CCA blasted Benton Community, 14-1, Saturday.

The winner advances to the state tournament July 16-20 at the Rogers Sports Complex, Fort Dodge.

A challenge, to be sure.

“It’s an excellent opportunity,” said Xavier interim coach Nikki Price. “We have nothing to lose. There’s no pressure on these girls.”

Pick a hitting hero, any hitting hero. Everybody contributed in some fashion.

Allison Schwach, Sydney Galligan and Erin Drahozal posted three hits apiece. Deutmeyer and Erica Miller both drove in three runs.

Xavier spotted Wahlert (16-25) an early 2-0 lead, but responded quickly and decisively.

“It was early,” Drahozal said. “We knew we could come back. We were confident; we’d beaten them before.”

Deutmeyer’s solo shot, a liner just inside the left-field pole in the top of the second, got the Saints on the board and rolling. The home run ball made its way into Deutmeyer’s possession, and it will come to rest in her room.

“She pitched it down the middle, and I got it pretty good,” she said.

A five-run third put Xavier in front, 6-2, and when the Saints tacked on three more in the fourth, the rout was imminent.

And so it continued. Two in the fifth, one in the sixth, two in the seventh.

Jacey Wiebold (11-9) gave up three straight hits to start the game, but got better as the game progressed. She pitched the first four innings, then Drahozal tossed three shutout innings to close up shop.

So now it’s Clear Creek Amana, a team that many consider the state’s best, in any class.

“We’re excited for the opportunity,” Drahozal said. “We played them tight last fall. We’re just excited to play the best team and see what happens.”

Maddy Nilles was 4-for-4 for Wahlert.
