I mock the mock NFL drafts. Someone will surely make an unexpected selection or trade Thursday night to upset the entire apple cart. Don’t you hate it when apple carts are upset?
I’m using Iowa offensive tackle Riley Reiff as an example because a) He’s from Iowa and I cover Iowa and b) Do I really need another reason?
As of 4 p.m., Wednesday, 25 hours before the Indianapolis Colts take Andrew Luck to get this three-day thing started, here is where Reiff is slotted:
No. 10 to Buffalo by Pat Kirwan of CBSSports.com. And Mark Potash of the Chicago Sun-Times. And Greg Cote of the Miami Herald. And Wes Bunting of NationalFootballPost.com. And Rainer Sabin of the Dallas Morning News. And Mike Tanier of Yahoo Sports.
No. 11 to Kansas City by D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. And The Sporting News.
No. 13 to Arizona, by WalterFootball.com. And Mike Mayock of NFL.com. And Rob Rang and Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com. And Drafttek.com. And Matt Vensel of the Baltimore Sun. And Sam McKewon of the Omaha World-Herald. And Todd McShay of ESPN. And Vittorio Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle. And Scott A. Williams of the Wausau Daily Herald.
No. 13 to Buffalo from a trade with Arizona, Scott Dochterman of TheGazette.com.
No. 16 to the New York Jets, by Chad Reuter of NFL Network, who also has Iowa’s Adam Gettis and Shaun Prater going in the 4th round, Marvin McNutt in the 6th, and Markus Zusevics in the 7th, with Iowa State’s Leonard Johnson and Kelechi Osemele going in the 3rd.
No. 18 to San Diego, by Peter King of SportsIllustrated.com. And Mel Kiper Jr. of ESPN.
No. 19 to Chicago, by Doug Farrar of Yahoo Sports.
No. 23 to Detroit, by Don Banks of SportsIllustrated.com. And Dane Brugler of CBSSports.com. And Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times.
No. 26 to Houston, by The Sports Network.
No. 29 to Baltimore, by Michael Lombardi of NFL Network.
Lombardi doesn’t like Iowa guys, because, he says, they are so well coached they have little upside in the pros.
Also, Klug and Yanda have “short arms.” Yup.
Lombardi does have a few really good insights from time to time, but like most “experts”, there’s multiple reasons why they are FORMER personnel executives. Reiff, IMO, actually has more room for improvement – more than Gallery/Nelson/etc. and some others did.
And Mike, I think your column is a little condescending towards your peers; there is no doubt at least one media/NFL personnel expert that will have at least 6 picks correct in their mock!
This “short arms” business is laughable in my opinion..
If teams at the top 10 of the draft are going to be foolish to pass up on a guy who’s been coached in NFL style zone blocking schemes his entire career-then I’d say there’s a pretty good reason why they’re in the Top 10 in the NFL Draft.
Falling further in the draft will only put Reiff playing on a quality NFL team instead of one of the more poorly run teams.
Well if he slips in the draft I sure hope my Chiefs continue the tradition of selecting Iowa Hawkeyes. He would be more than a welcome addition to our Offensive Line!!!!
