UPDATE: Two people were shot at an apartment complex near the Kirkwood Community College campus Friday afternoon, and a third shooting victim arrived at a Cedar Rapids hospital a short time later, police confirm.
Officers were dispatched around 12:35 p.m. to an apartment at 311 Kirkwood Ct. SW.
All three shooting victims went to Mercy Medical Center by ambulance, police said, including two victims from the scene -- a 21-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man. A third man came to Mercy, also with a gunshot wound.
All three victims were in critical condition Friday afternoon, police said. The 21-year-old woman was transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
It's unclear if the three shooting victims are from the same incident or two separate incidents, police said.
Several areas, including Kirkwood and Prairie High School, went into lockdown mode, but those restrictions have since been lifted.
Mike Foley, 18, who lives in an apartment building nearby, saw several police cars arrive to the area and walked down to see the scene. He said he saw two people brought out on stretchers and put into an ambulance.
“The one looked pretty bad, but I really couldn't tell,” Foley said. “It's pretty messed up. It's pretty scary.”
The ambulances left the area quickly with lights and sirens running, witnesses said.
Police have a section of the parking lot near building 311 taped off and were conducting interviews. A K-9 unit dog was also on the scene.
Police say they do not have a suspect in custody, but that there is no danger to the public.
Students who live at the apartment complex flocked to the scene to get a glimpse of the activity, but media was moved to an area off private property.
With three shooting victims on Friday, a total of five people have been shot in Cedar Rapids in five days. Raphael C. Blackwell Jr. was shot and killed early Monday morning outside of a strip club. Another man was shot in the mouth on Tuesday evening, but had non-life threatening injuries.
