A seventh-round pick of the Los Angeles Angels in 2011 first-year player draft out of Grayson County College in Texas, the same school that produced former Kernels pitchers Jordan Walden and John Lackey. Played as a freshman at Baylor before going the Juco route. Has a brother, Aaron, playing in Baltimore Orioles organization. Their grandfather, Jerry Mays, was a star defensive lineman for the Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Texans in the old American Football League.
