Former Michigan wide receiver Junior Hemingway sat down with reporters this morning at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. We asked him for his thoughts on Michigan QB Denard Robinson’s future and the upcoming Michigan-Alabama death match in Dallas.
Oh, and he maintains he caught the disputed touchdown pass that didn’t count against Iowa last fall in a Hawkeye victory.
Here’s what he said:
Mel Kiper said he sees Denard Robinson going to the NFL as a receiver. What do you think of that?
“He’ll probably go to the league as a receiver.”
Have you ever seen him run routes?
“All I’ve seen Denard run is go routes. He’ll come out, ‘Let me run a go, man.’ I’m like ‘Denard, run something else, man. Everybody knows you’re going deep.’”
How are Denard’s hands?
“Denard can catch pretty good. He catches snaps all the time. He catches low, high, so he’s got to be able to catch some. He’s got good hands.”
How important was it to finish your career by beating Ohio State and Virginia Tech?
“I think it was real good to come out, especially in my last season. Then with the team with they got now, to keep them going, they’ve got a lot of good in store ahead of them. It gives me something to look back on and keep working.”
Does Denard realize he’s going to be a receiver in the NFL?
“I haven’t really talked to him about it. I haven’t talked to him since February.”
“He’s probably got a feeling he’s going to be playing a different position. But Denard’s a humble guy. Whatever it is, he’s going to take it in stride and keep going. I ain’t worried about that.”
Were you in bounds or out of bounds against Iowa?
“I was in bounds. I was in bounds. [emphatic] My foot and knee (were) down in bounds.
Did you watch it on replay?
“I was so mad after that game. I was just, I was mad. I watched it. I thought I was in but the referee called something else. Can’t argue with that.”
Convince me why Michigan is going to beat Alabama?
“All the work they’ve put in in the offseason. They’re going to grind from day one all the way up to that point through the season. Because I already went through it. I know how it is and that’s why I’m convinced they’re going to beat Alabama in the first game.”
