New details released after car slams into Cedar Rapids house

Charges are pending after a car slammed into a northeast Cedar Rapids house early Saturday morning.

Police said the eastbound driver, Lindsey Paul, 22, of Marion, was coming down a steep hill around 3:15 a.m. when she lost control and collided with a house at 159 Brentwood Dr. NE. Firefighters had to pull Paul and her passenger, 22-year-old Damon Wegmuller, of Marion, from the wreckage. No one in the house was injured.

Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said Wegmuller suffered "very serious" injuries in the crash. He was transported to St. Luke's Hospital and later later transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Paul was taken to St. Luke's, but was not listed as a patient there Monday, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Police estimated the damage on the house at $20,000. Mohammad Youssef, whose family rents the home, told SourceMedia Group he was inside with his wife and two children.

“We're glad it wasn't close to our bedroom or even close to the kids,” Youssef said.

Neighbors said speeding is a common problem on the street. Youssef said his wife had been worried a car would eventually hit their house.

“People always drive too quickly,” Youssef said.

Police are continuing to investigate the crash. Hamblin said no charges have been filed yet. She said investigators are awaiting the results of tests on Paul and to determine Wegmuller's condition.
