An overnight fire has killed 28 calves and destroyed a barn in east-central Iowa.

Authorities say the fire broke out near midnight Sunday at the barn south of Washburn, just east of U.S. Highway 218. By 3 a.m. Monday, a bulldozer was tearing down the barn debris. Two other buildings also were damaged.

The fire cause is being investigated.
