UPDATE: A Solon man and his 5 year-old son died in a head-on crash Monday morning north of Solon.
The Iowa State Patrol says Gregory Engrav, 37, of Solon, died in the crash. His son, Zachary Engrav, was pronounced dead at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics a short time later.
Iowa State Patrol Trooper Mike Hicks said Engrav's silver Chevy Impala crossed the center line and slammed head-on into a white Ford Explorer around 8:00 am. The mangled car stopped in the middle of the highway and the SUV went into the east ditch. The driver of the SUV, Melissa Bachus of Solon, was taken to the hospital but is expected to survive.
Gregory Engrav was charged with first-degree robbery in a hold-up last year at Solon Drug. Prosecutors say Engrav, armed with a knife, demanded prescription medications from the pharmacist. His trial was scheduled for March 7.
Zachary Engrav was in kindergarten at Lakeview Elementary in Solon. School superintendent Sam Miller said counselors and other support staff will be at the school throughout the week to help classmates cope.
