Neighbors have a chance to learn more about a proposed expansion to Penford Products Co.

The decades-old business is hosting the first of three public meetings Monday to talk about their plan.

Penford, located at 1001 1st St. SW, hopes to buy land from the City of Cedar Rapids. It wants to build on Riverside Park, which is right next to the business.

Penford's president said the expansion could bring dozens of jobs to the area.

Some people, though, have expressed concerns. The 11-acre park houses the Riverside skate park, which leaves many wondering what will happen to it. Others are worried about the impact the expansion could have with added noise, traffic or smells downtown.

The company has offered to replace the skate park and said its proposal addresses the other concerns as well. Business representatives will discuss all of the details at community meetings this week.

Monday's public meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. at Taylor Elementary School. Tuesday’s meeting is also at 7:00 p.m. at the CSPS Hall in New Bohemia. The final meeting is Wednesday night at 5:30 at the Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce.
