Foul play not suspected in Crawfordsville woman's disappearance
Jan. 13, 2012 9:15 am
A missing Crawfordsville woman left the area on her on her own, Washington County Sheriff Jerry Dunbar announced at a news conference on Friday.
Along with members of the family and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Dunbar announced that foul play isn't suspected.
Dunbar said there is "no threat to the public."
Sharon Hopf, 45, has been missing since last Thursday after she failed to show up to work. Hopf owns furniture stores in both Coralville and Kalona.
Perry Hopf, Sharon's husband, was visibly upset and emotional during the news conference.
Last weekend, the DCI reported that Hopf's 1999 Chevrolet Lumina was found in Warren County, Missouri. Hopf's cell phone and a few other personal items were found inside the car, but there were no other signs of her, authorities said.
An investigation revealed that Hopf cashed a check for $1,000 to herself a short time before leaving town. Witnesses also reported seeing her putting gas in her Chevy Lumina, authorities said. Hopf also powered down her cell phone shortly after she left her home, a DCI special agent said.
Dunbar they are still treating this as a missing persons case, so Hopf won't face any charges. Her family asked her to "please come home" as the news conference concluded.
