In case you didn’t get the message, we’re looking for people who want to submit their own “Homers” and “Gomers” for publication online and in The Gazette.

“Your Homers” and “Your Gomers” will be modeled after The Gazette’s own version that is published every Monday. Please don’t confuse them with the standard letter to the editor. They are brief, very succinct commentaries about public issues and events that you believe warrant recognition or fair, constructive criticism — especially those involving your community or neighborhood.

As usual, there are a few guidelines:

— Length limit of 60 words (that’s the average length of the Gazette’s version, too); focus on one point, event or issue.

— No personal attacks or libelous statements.

— Include your full name and verifiable address and phone number (address and phone number will not be published; they’re for verification only).

- Be sure you have verified the information in your submission.

— Identify your commentary as a “Homer” or “Gomer.”

- Frequency limit on publication: Maximum of once every 30 days, although you are welcome to submit more often.

So I hope you’ll give this a try. It’s another way to voice your opinion on something you deeply care about. Let me know if you have questions or concerns.

  1. Okay – Here’s a gomer.

Most published letters to the editor (PLTE) appear on-line, giving people the option to comment on them.. However, not all PLTEs appear, denying people an opportunity to opine. That is the case today with a PLTE about Salvation Army bell ringers. All PLTEs should be available for comment on line. Otherwise, they should not be published.

  2. “Homers” and “Gomers” can be emailed to the Opinion Page Editor at jeff.tecklenburg@gazcomm.com
