The Greater Iowa City Area Home Builders Association announced winners of its home-building awards.
2011 Builder of the Year
(Chad Mellinger – Mellinger & Sons)
As an Iowa native and builder, with over 10 years of home building experience, Mellinger & Sons, a custom builder has built the company’s reputation of excellence.
The company also owns a cabinet company “Cabinetworks”. Many of their homes feature custom cabinetry, trim, staircases, bars and exquisite woodworking.
Our 2011 Builder of the Year, Mellinger & Sons has grown into one of the most respected home builders in the area by focusing on long-standing relationships with trade partners, quality craftsmanship, and exceptional customer service.
Chad Mellinger continues to be active in the home building industry and will serve as the 2012 President of the Greater Iowa City Area Home Builders Association serving almost 300 members. Mellinger and Sons have won four Builder Excellence Awards. They participate in the Parade of Homes yearly and actively support the local HBA.
2011 Remodeler of the Year
(Chris Weckmann – Carpentry by Chris)
Carpentry by Chris is a Design-Build company established in Iowa City in 2000. They are a full service remodeling company that built a reputation for providing quality work, and quality partnering.
Their mission is to improve the quality of life for their clients through a Design-Build remodeling process that solves functional needs and addresses aesthetic desires.
Education and safety is a priority for this remodeler and his employees. His activities include:
- President of local BNI (Business Networking International) chapter.
- President of Sand Hill Estates Homeowners Association
- Assists with Habitat for Humanity projects.
- Develops and offers routine maintenance for the Miller Orchard Community Garden.
Carpentry By Chris has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. Upon project completion they worked closely with Guild Quality to survey clients to insure client satisfaction. Carpentry By Chris was been awarded Guildmaster with distinction each year for exemplary customer service. They were recognized in Qualified Remodeler Magazine as one of the top 55 Quality Leaders in 2010.
Chris Weckmann of Carpentry by Chris, is a Certified Graduate Remodeler, Certified Green Professional and Aging in Place Specialists is the 2011 Remodeler of the Year. Chris began his remodeling company out of his home in 2000. Carpentry by Chris has 6 employees and continues to develop his business.
Chris has been a HBA member since 2004. He serves on the Remodelers Council Board and will be the Vice-chair in 2012. Chris encourages small business partners toward HBA membership and involvement. His company participates annually in the Remodelers Parade.

(Dave Oglesby – Plumbers Supply Company)
Dave Oglesby works closely with the HBA to provide training classes/continuing education opportunities
Local Association Activity – Our associate participates in:
- Iowa City Home & Builder Show committee member, 2008-present.
- Parade of Homes Committee member, 2008-present. Hosted 2010 & 2011 Builders Excellence Awards Ceremony.
- New Construction Open House committee member, 2009-present. Assisted with creation of NCOH logo.
- HBA Education Committee Chair. Participates in HBA membership meetings, serves as HBA photographer for various events, and has hosted HBA member mix-n-mingle events for HBA members.
He volunteered for the Iowa City Crisis Center , and “The Spot” center, an outreach program for his church. Served as a board member of Iowa City A.M. Rotary , Served as a Deacon at Parkview Church, Chaired the Associate Pastor Nominating Committee for St. Andrew Church, Chaired the company United Way campaign for Bankers Advertising, served on the Irving Weber Education Fund Board, and Board of Directors of the State Historical Society Inc.,He works closely with the Iowa Plumbing & Mechanical Systems Board and with state approved instructors to get training classes for plumbing & mechanical contractors certified for Iowa Statewide licensing requirements.
