A Cedar Rapids attorney was released without bond after being charged with possession of a controlled substance, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday in U.S. District Court.
Stanley A. Roush, 52 waived his right to a preliminary hearing during his initial appearance Monday, and no trial date was set.
Roush was charged after he made a $200 controlled purchase of crack cocaine involving a confidential informant, according to the criminal complaint. The informant told drug task force officers in May that Roush allegedly smoked crack cocaine with her once a month and gave her money to purchase crack cocaine.
According to the complaint, Roush and the informant drove to the parking lot of the Valley View Apartment complex, 427 Ashton Place NE, to meet a drug contact, and the informant gave the contact $200 for two small plastic bags of crack cocaine. Task force officers conducted surveillance, using a digital recording device and an audio transmitter, during the drug transaction, according to the complaint.
A task force officer arrested Roush in his vehicle at a gas station after receiving a call from the informant, according to the complaint. Roush told the officer he swallowed the crack, but officers recovered it from the floor behind the driver's seat of Roush's car, according to the complaint.
Roush was previously convicted in January 2003 for possession of marijuana, according to federal court records.
Roush didn't return a call left Monday morning at his law office.
