This from UI sports info:
IOWA CITY, Iowa - - University of Iowa defensive end John Raymon has decided to withdraw from classes at the University of Iowa. Raymon is a true freshman from Richboro, Pa, (Council Rock North HS).
“John has decided to withdraw from classes and leave the University of Iowa,” said Iowa Associate Athletic Director for Compliance, Fred Mims. “We wish John academic and athletic success when he chooses to enroll at another institution.”
Iowa (5-2) plays at Minnesota, Saturday at 2:30 p.m. (BTN HD).
– HawkeyeInsider's Rob Howe contacted true freshman John Raymon the morning of the Northwestern game. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound defensive end was home near Philadelphia and told Rob he was leaving Iowa for the ACC or Big East.
Here's Rob's post.
After the game, I asked Kirk Ferentz about Raymon's whereabouts and he said, “He's not going to be playing this year. . . . He's around, yes.” Maybe they were trying to talk him into staying. Who knows.
Iowa D-line is experiencing an attrition cluster that will affect the roster for . . . who knows? Two years maybe?
Of the departed players, however, only Jason Semmes has had any impact anywhere else. Last season, he led Miami (Ohio) with six sacks and has 2.5 this season.
Martin Hopkins remains at the UI. Scott Covert switched to fullback and left the team this fall. Tyler Harrell left before his freshman year. Anthony Ferguson quit after his freshman year, but remains a student at Iowa. Donavan Johnson was an academic casualty after spring practice this season.
Before you jump to any conclusions, it's hard to play DL at Iowa, tackle particularly. Iowa plays a Two Gap scheme, which requires D-linemen to wrestle with OLs and push them into running lanes. It's very physical and, apparently, not for everybody.
Or as former Iowa DE Adrian Clayborn tweeted to me Oct. 11, “Love it or leave it.”
So true.
