For the second time this week, a Cedar Rapids teenager was shot in the leg early Thursday morning.
Mike Martinez, 17, was shot once in his right thigh in the 1500 block of Second Avenue SE, police said. The wound was not considered life-threatening, police said.
Police responded around 1:30 a.m. to 1515 Second Ave. SE when gunshots were reported in the area. Officers discovered blood at the scene, which trailed between two houses and stopped, leading them to believe the victim got into a car in the alley.
About 35 minutes later, staff at Mercy Medical Center notified police about a shooting victim.
Martinez told investigators he was walking with two friends when he saw a man point a gun at him and shoot. He started to run and was struck in the leg. He claimed he did not know the man who shot at him, police said.
Martinez was not certain about the address where he was shot, but police believe it was where they located the blood near Second Avenue SE.
The suspect was described as a black man wearing black clothing and a black hat. An investigation was continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-CS-CRIME.
