9-year-old boy killed in Evansdale boating accident
Aug. 18, 2011 8:27 am
Evansdale police say a 9-year-old boy died Wednesday following a water skiing accident at Eagle Lake.
Investigators say around 12:35 p.m. Wednesday, they responded to the lake after reports of a person hit by a boat. Police say the child and two other people fell while skiing at Eagle Lake, where the Waterhawks Ski Club holds performances.
Officials said Thursday that Bodee Peterson, 9, of Hudson, was taken to Covenant Medical Center, where he later died.
The boat's driver told investigators that he thought the three swam to shore. The boat's nose blocked his view of them in the water.
Sgt. Jeff Jensen of the Evansdale Police Department was the first officer on the scene. He said Peterson had "injuries to his back and shoulder areas."
Investigators say Peterson was a member of the Waterhawks, but this outing was more informal.
"The day before school starts," said Jensen. "One last time on the water before heading back to school."
Police say they're treating the incident as an accident, and do not plan to file charges.
"A true tragedy," said Jensen. "Nobody intended this to happen, but it did."
There's no word on the condition of the other people who fell into the water during the same incident.
