A member of the U.S. Secret Service in Decorah in advance of President Barack Obama's visit here Monday was arrested for first-offense operating while intoxicated early Saturday morning.
Daniel L. Valencia, 40, of Washington, D.C., was jailed after a Decorah police officer stopped him for running a red light at about 1:30 a.m., according to court records. When he stopped the vehicle, the officer detected a strong smell of alcohol. The officer administered field sobriety testing and determined Valencia was too impaired to be driving.
Valencia refused to provide a breathalyzer test and was jailed, records said. He was released Monday after posting bail.
Decorah Police Chief Bill Nixon said Valencia was off duty at the time of his arrest.
