D-line coach Rick Kaczenski watches Mike Daniels (93) go through a drill with Louis Trinca-Pasat. Freshman Darian Cooper is in the foreground. (Marc Morehouse)

I’ve written here before, these stats don’t mean a lot. No one within the program is taken them because no one really cares.

Gives me something to do. (OK, maybe someone is taking notes on the kickers.)

 Kickers

Walk-on freshman Marshall Koehn is in this. Kirk Ferentz said as much after Saturday’s scrimmage. Junior Trent Mossbrucker isn’t out of this. He might have been the most consistent Saturday. Mike Meyer doesn’t own this. He got first shot, but also had three misses from long range.

Strongest leg, maybe Koehn. His misses had nothing to do with power, drawing a couple slightly wide left.

Mike Meyer — 6 of 9 with misses from 45 (right hash/wide right), 45 (LH/WL) and 50 (M/WL).

Trent Mossbrucker — 8 of 10 with misses from 45 (RH/WL) and 40 (RH/WR). He got a do-over on the 28-yarder out of two-minute drill after he had one tipped but still scoot good over the crossbar.

Marshall Koehn — 7 0f 9 with misses from 45 (LH/WL), 50 (M/WL). He didn’t have a lot of air under his made 49-yarder. Plenty of distance from 45 to 50.

Passing

The No. 2 reps were split as evenly as humanly possible. Ferentz said after that no decision has been made, and that’s apparent. Maybe John Wienke has a slight edge over A.J. Derby, but impossible to say for sure. Derby did run one zone read for a 3-yard loss.

Jake Rudock is not out of the question for No. 2 or 3. He made some throws today, including a 47-yard TD. He also made smart decisions. Granted, he played against the No. 3 D. Ferentz didn’t say he was out of it afterward.

James Vandenberg — 15 of 25 for 159 yards (one big miss on a wide-open TE C.J. Fiedorowicz that might’ve gone for 6)

John Wienke — 4 of 10 for 33 yards

A.J. Derby — 1o of 14 for 91 yards and two interceptions (CB B.J. Lowery got a tipped pass and linebacker Anthony Hitchens undercut an out route)

Jake Rudock — 5 of 9 for 85 yards and a TD (a 47-yarder to fellow freshman Marcus Grant)

Rushing

De’Andre Johnson had his helmet taken away early. Looked like an upper-body injury, but nothing confirmed. Sophomore Marcus Coker wore a red jersey. After, Ferentz said he was a little beat up so he was held out for precautions. But really, since 2004, Iowa has stopped tackling running backs in practice. Saturday was the first day it was open and it wasn’t all that open for tackling RBs.

True freshman Mika’il McCall will play. He belongs out there. He moves the pile. True freshman Jordan Canzeri has a shot. Quickest to the hole. He had the days longest runs of 13 and 10 yards. The 13 would’ve been longer, but he stumbled.

All the TDs came out of goal line situations.

Jason White — 8 for 17 and two TDs

De’Andre Johnson — 3 for 13

Mika’il McCall — 14 for 51 and three TDs

Jordan Canzeri — 7 for 48

Damon Bullock — 6 for 17

James Vandenberg — 1 for minus-1 (set up field goal)

A.J. Derby 1 for -3 (zone read gone wrong)

Receiving

Kevonte Martin-Manley seems to have No. 3 wrapped up. Don Shumpert is 4. After that, maybe Nick Nielsen or maybe Marcus Grant, who had the day’s only legit TD.

Don Shumpert — 2 for 18

Kevonte Martin-Manley — 5 for 54 (one drop)

Jason White — 3 for 8

Zach Derby — 2 for 23

Keenan Davis — 3 for 44

Ray Hamilton — 3 for 34

Nick Nielsen — 1 for 14

Marcus Grant — 2 for 58 TD (drop)

C.J. Fiedorowicz — 2 for 27

Marvin McNutt — 2 for 54 (no push off on the 45-yarder, he said; there was no call)

Henry Krieger-Coble — 1 for 5

Jacob Hillyer — 1 for 8

Mika’il McCall — 3 for 18

Mark Weisman — 1 for 14 (only fullback stat of the day; he’s a transfer from Air Force and not playing this season)

Miscellaneous

Punt return — It went like this: 1) Micah Hyde, 2) Marvin McNutt, 3) Keenan Davis (dropped one), 4) Kevonte Martin-Manley. At the beginning of practice, Jordan Canzeri was in this mix. He’s being looked at for this and probably kick return.

Penalties — There were at least three holding penalties called and maybe a couple more. The flags stopped flying after awhile. There were five false starts. Ferentz not happy about that. Four pass interference penalties were called, including three on freshman Torrey Campbell. No big deal, you want a true freshman being aggressive. He was in great position, just a little early.

Sacks/pressures/flushes — DT Mike Daniels was a consistent presence on the DL. He owned one series. Against RT Markus Zusevics, DE Broderick Binns provided a pressure and a flush. DE Joe Gaglione had a sack. Frosh DT Darian Cooper will play this year. After Daniels, he might’ve been Saturday’s most consistent inside player. There were a couple cover sacks. LB Melvin Spears, DE Riley McMinn and DT Louis Trinca-Pasat had sacks in second- and third-team situations.

Sprints after practice. I think it was eight 55-yard dashes in a certain amount of time.
