NORTH LIBERTY — Iowa seniors Bryce Cartwright and Matt Gatens leave later this week to participate on a national select basketball team in Estonia.
Cartwright and Gatens will play three exhibitions with the East Coast All-Stars as part of the 4-Nations Cup in Tallinn, Estonia next month. Their team will play select teams from Estonia, Sweden and the Republic of Georgia.
“It’s a learning experience to see another part of the world,” Gatens said. “It’s going to be a learning experience and hopefully a good basketball experience.
“It should be a good time.”
Gatens said he plans to research Estonia before heading to Eastern Europe. Cartwright said he got his passport two months ago and is looking forward to playing there.
“It’s my next challenge,” Cartwright said. “I completed the Prime Time League; we didn’t win, but we were successful this summer as far as developing and getting better.”
Gatens and Cartwright will participate in a two-day training camp in Williamsport, Pa., on July 31 and Aug. 1. They travel on Aug. 2, do some sightseeing on Aug. 3, scrimmage on Aug. 4 and then play Georgia on Aug. 5. They play Estonia on Aug. 6, play Sweden on Aug. 7 and travel back on Aug. 8.
Wisconsin junior forward Mike Bruesewitz also will play on the American team.
