Cedar Rapids to hold homecoming for National Guard troops

A ceremony will be held in Cedar Rapids this week for an Iowa National Guard unit returning from Afghanistan.
Community members will welcome home about 50 members of Company C, Brigade Special Troops Battalion at the Prairie Point Middle School gym, 401 76th Ave. SW, at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, the Iowa National Guard said.
The event is one of three homecoming ceremonies in Iowa this week – including homecomings in Johnston and Boone – members of the approximately 2,900-member 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division deployed in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
The units arrived Afghanistan in November after spending about three months at Camp Shelby in Mississippi for additional training.
