Overnight fire damages local restaurant
Jul. 10, 2011 11:30 am
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A late night fire damaged a local restaurant Saturday. Cedar Rapids Firefighters responded to a fire at Tommy's Restaurant just after 10:00 p.m. Saturday.
The restaurant is on the 300-block of Edgewood Road Northwest. They say a Cedar Rapids police officer alerted the fire department after responding to a triggered motion sensor alarm.
No one was inside the building at the time. Firefighters say when they arrived on scene, flames were shooting through the roof of the restaurant.
Investigators say it appears the fire started in a store room where a dryer was left running. They say it was either a dryer failure or the towels inside caught on fire.
A vacant business near Tommy's was damaged by smoke. This is the third building fire in 18-months caused by spontaneous heating.
Fire crews responded to the Edgewood Plaza building that houses Tommy's Restaurant and one other business, at 393 Edgewood Road. (Chris Earl/Sourcemedia Group)
