KOEPPEL SELECTED TO U.S. NATIONAL TEAM
IOWA CITY, Iowa - - Former University of Iowa offensive lineman Josh Koeppel has been selected to play on the 2011 U.S. Menís National team in football. The 39-member team, made up of former college standouts, will compete in the fourth International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Senior World Championship. The event will be held in Austria July 8-16.
Koeppel is one of two former Big Ten athletes competing for the U.S. in the eight nation tournament that has been held every four years since 1999. The U.S. won the 2007 tournament, as it defeated Japan in double overtime, 23-20.
Koeppel, a former walk-on, earned his first career start against Indiana on Nov. 6, 2010. The Iowa City native ended his Iowa career by starting at right guard for the Hawkeyes during their final five games. Koeppel was honored with two team awards at the conclusion of his senior season, as he was awarded the Next Man In Award (offense) and the Forest Evashevski Scholastic Achievement Award. He was also a two-time academic all-Big Ten selection.
The U.S. opens tournament play July 8 against Australia at 8 a.m. (CT). The Americans then face Germany on July 10 at 12 p.m. (CT) before squaring off against Mexico on July 12 at 12 p.m. (CT). All three games will be played is Innsbruck, Austria. The tournamentís Gold Medal Game will be held July 16 at 12 p.m. (CT) in Vienna, Austria.
