Apr. 30, 2011 4:03 pm
The New York Giants drafted safety Tyler Sash, one of the biggest defensive playmakers in Iowa football history, with a compensatory pick in the sixth round Saturday afternoon.
Sash, who left Iowa after his junior season grabbed 13 interceptions in three seasons for the Hawkeyes. Sash, an Oskaloosa native, ranks first in Iowa history with 392 interception return yards, which also ranks fourth in Big Ten history. He started 37 games in three seasons for Iowa.
"All I know is this kid had made plays," NFL Network analyst Charles Davis said. "I watched him in the bowl game against Georgia Tech against their run-oriented attack. He just destroyed them. He was in the alley making plays. He and Greenwood, the other safety, were terrific.

He was named first-team all-Big Ten after his sophomore and junior seasons. He was named All-American by various publications and was a third-team All-American after the 2009 season. He had six interceptions, 5.5 tackles for loss, six pass breakups and two forced fumbles as a sophomore. His 203 interception return yards in 2009 was most in school history.
Among some of the more memorable Sash moments include:
- Stopped an Iowa State drive with an end zone interception in 2008
- In 2008, a late interception against Penn State propelled Iowa to a game-winning field to upset the undefeated and No. 3-ranked Nittany Lions
- Picked off two passes against South Carolina in a 31-10 win in the Outback Bowl
- Intercepted Iowa State quarterbacks three times in a 35-3 win in 2009, tying a school record
- Had a 41-yard interception return against Arizona in 2009
- Picked off a pass from Indiana quarterback Ben Chappell after the ball had bounced off four other players and returned it 86 yards for a touchdown to thwart a Hoosiers' scoring threat in 2009
- Intercepted Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins and flipped the ball to teammate Micah Hyde for a 66-yard touchdown return in 2010
- Had a 36-yard interception return against Michigan and returned a blocked field goal 37 yards in that game
