Time wasted debating the same-sex marriage issue is taking time away from lawmakers doing their jobs. Political posturing by officials, who obviously never took the required “government” class in school, are preying on others of the same ilk who do not understand the “Balance of Power.”

Our system of government consists of the legislative branch, executive branch and judicial branch. The role of the judicial branch is to ensure that no law is passed by the others that is unconstitutional.

In a court case, each side must present its case. The only case presented against same-sex marriage was bigotry and ancient superstitions, no facts. It is the right of an individual to love whom he or she chooses.

I wonder if the same-sex marriage opponents follow all of their laws themselves? Do you plan on selling your daughter into slavery? (Ex 21:7) If you touch your wife when she is having her period, do you wash your clothes and bathe yet still remain unclean until you are magically cleansed at sundown? (Lev 15:19-24) Do you wear poly/cotton or do you plant two crops side by side in your garden? (Lev 19:19) When was the last time you killed your neighbor for working on the sabbath? (Ex 35:2)

Let’s tackle some real issues, like school funding, help for the disabled and clean energy. Stop wasting time on bigotry using religion as a reason to hate.

Remember, when religion ruled the world it was called, “The Dark Ages.”

Let’s stop debating same-sex marriage and focus on real issues
  1. Give an inch, and they take a mile Mr. Klahm…

For not wanting to debate same-sex marriage, you sure do offer an opinion…

    • Sometimes it takes a mallet upside the head of the wingnuts to get them to understand something Joe.

      • Or an idiot letter writer to argue about stopping this debate and than debating on it, thus giving more fuel to the moonbat cause.

        • It’s only an “idiot letter writer” if one disagrees with the content of the letter.

          • …or a “moonbat” if someone is a wingnut suffering from Perfectly Descriptive Label Envy.

          • So he is not an idiot letter writer for wanting to stifle debate?

            How progressive of you Morris!

And Asinus, he is as much of a moonbat as anyone who refers to someone else as a “wingnut”.

          • Morris, the problem is this guy asked to stop debate and then debated it. It is a terrible letter. He offers nothing constructive what so ever. Just wanted to slam Christians. And I would say I am looking at this from the same side as you pretty much.

  2. I couldn’t agree more William. “The people” elected those they thought would go to Des Moines and tackle the important issues, namely the budget, job creation and education. What “the people” have gotten thus far is one half of the legislature spending its time going after “pet projects” and issues that pander to its base. At least the other half of the legislature is willing and able to block such foolish nonsense upon arrival to its chambers.

  3. The tedious circus in the State House chamber is ALL about the GOP playing to the 40% of fundamentalists who vote Republican. Fundamentalists are first and foremost social conservatives, not fiscal conservatives; and so state money matters get shoved to the rear of the queue in order to allow the recently-elected GOP representatives to put on a show for the benefit of those who elected them, thus improving their chances for re-election.

Those who consider themselves “independents” and who voted for the GOP thinking that they were choosing fiscal prudence over social-issue micromanagement are the ones with the most “voters’ remorse” this legislative session.

    • … should have been expressed as “fundamentalists who make up 40% of Republican voters”. As far as I know, 100% of fundamentalists who vote, vote Republican.

  4. There is a momentum in this country for the full acceptance of gay and lesbian people and same sex marriage. Polls indicate growing acceptance and various recent actions such as the repeal of Don’t Ask – Don’t Tell and the governments decision not to defend DOMA are all adding to the momentum. It is virtually inevitable that it will be fully accepted nationally within a few years.

Yet, a few fools in Des Moines insist on wasting time and energy (and money) in a futile effort to stop the inevitable.

    • I agree that at some point the tide will conclusively turn and from that point forward we can watch the legislators slavishly chase the new direction of public opinion. Untl then, the GOP has decided to surf the polluted tides of regressivism and denial; but you really can’t blame a snake for being a snake.

  5. Well Wlliam I can’t agree with your bigoted comments or your suggestion that your opinion gets to decide what is a real issue. The rest isn’t worth commenting upon.

    • ‘k, thnx, bye, Gary

    • Specifically what “bigoted comments” are you referring to (he mentioned “bigotory” but where are the bigoted comments?) and where is the suggestion that his opinion gets to decide what the real issue is ? He has a right to express his opinion of what the “real (important) issues” are, doesn’t he ?
As far as “The rest isn’t worth commenting on”: I suspect you take that position because you really can’t counter his statements.

  6. Its simple. Repubs can only get elected if they get the bigot vote. Then they can get the judges and laws favoring corporate and wealthy domination of the regular people. How sad for America. We came so far and now we slip back. Wise up bagger/bigots, you are being used. They dont care about your issues, just your vote.

    • It’s not just the bagger/bigots but the uninformed, misinformed, gullible, simple minded, Etc. Just look at the polls over the years at the numbers of Republicans versus the rest of the population who believe(d) things like Iraq being behind 9-11, WMD in Iraq even after the Administration admitted there were none, Obama being a Muslim or not a citizen, in the end of the World and the coming rapture, (on state level) that the IA Supreme Court made a SSM law, climate change is a hoax, just to name a few that come to mind.

  7. we need to put pressure on our state and fed legislators to Guarantee civil rights for all ! George you don’t help the cause calling people baggers and bigots. while I agree with lower taxes, I also would like to see universal health care, but I also support the 2nd amendment. and yes I feel marriage Is a civil right. election time really sucks for the independent thinker.

  8. So Lori you are embracing anti-religious bigotry.

“Do you plan on selling your daughter into slavery? (Ex 21:7) If you touch your wife when she is having her period, do you wash your clothes and bathe yet still remain unclean until you are magically cleansed at sundown? (Lev 15:19-24) Do you wear poly/cotton or do you plant two crops side by side in your garden? (Lev 19:19) When was the last time you killed your neighbor for working on the sabbath? (Ex 35:2)”
