Anthony Tucker had a turbulent two years as a University of Iowa basketball player, and that pattern continues.

Tucker, a junior guard at NCAA Division II Winona State, has been suspended indefintely from the Warriors’ team as it nears the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament this week.

Tucker was arrested Saturday night in Winona for disorderly conduct at 1:28 a.m. on Monday after a confrontation with Winona State security and Winona Police outside a Winona State residence hall.

At Iowa, Tucker was suspended twice for alcohol-related incidents and was academically ineligible the second semester of his freshman season.

He averaged 11.9 points in the games he did play his sophomore season. After he was released from his scholarship last February, he eventually transferred to Winona State in his home state, and was eligible to play right away in the 2010-2011 season.

Winona State is a D-II power, having won the national-championship in 2006 and 2008. But this season has been rocky, as this Daily News story about the Warriors’ regular-season finale suggests.

“Somebody has to step up and get the job done. I think that is one of the things we are lacking right now is that person, a go-to guy. We don’t have that,” said (Coach Mike) Leaf, whose team fell to 17-9, 13-9 in the NSIC.

Tucker’s statistics look pretty good. He has a team-high 15.9 points per game, and is second on the Warriors in assists and steals. He had played in all 26 games, with 22 starts, and is second on the squad in minutes played.

  1. This is just sad.

  2. You can change the uniform but the guy inside of it stays the same…

  3. Is Tucker a bad guy? No…but its clear that he’s still very immature and has a lot of growing up to do.

Iowa was right in letting Tucker go…he was given the opportunities to better himself and he failed to take them.

  4. The boy truly needs to grow up.

  5. uhoh! Justin Vanlaere has had a serious man crush on Anthony Tucker since he signed at Iowa. I bet this sends him into a deep depression!

    • @Shane Brown – You know me, just a man crusher and all. I actually followed Tucker’s game pre-Iowa. When I used to frequent the Scout message boards, I did say while his talent was there, the people I had talked to in the cities said he had some maturity issues but that he had gotten past them. When I watched his game, I stood firm that his jump shot was one of the purest I had ever seen from a prep athlete. There’s no doubt that Tucker has just done everything wrong that he could have done wrong. I can’t vouche for his personal issues, the guy just doesn’t learn from his mistakes. The only thing I could and did comment on are his on-the-court attributes, which I frequently did. What a waste of talent from a guy that really has trouble staying on the straight and narrow. A real shame, but he has dug his own hole.

  6. It seems to me that, when taking on a transfer in athletics, a school should be more discerning and look into the prospects citizenship and resolve. In fact, perhaps a citizenship course should be a requisite for the jocks.
