Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery talked tonight on his weekly radio show about his team’s back court difficulties. Here’s a sampling of his comments:
“We don’t have a lot of depth in the back court with Cully’s injury.”
“We’ve had to squeeze Eric May back there and he’s a small forward.
“Cartwright is playing too many minutes, but that’s out of necessity.”
“If you look at (Cartwright’s) game, where it suffers is at the defensive end of the floor.”
McCaffery said he lit into his team after Saturday’s 75-72 loss to Michigan but said after he watched the film the team played better than he had originally thought.
When asked who is McCaffery’s go-to guy, McCaffery said, “I don’t think we have a go-to guy. I think we have go-to guys.”
McCaffery said Bryce Cartwright, Matt Gatens and Melsahn Basabe are his “go-to guys” and McCaffery also threw Zach McCabe into the mix.
McCaffery was asked about his incoming recruits, Aaron White and Josh Oglesby. Here’s what McCaffery said about White:
“He’s one of those guys that does not look athletic (but) is really athletic. He can jump.
“We can post him up. He can pick and pop. … He can rip and attack the rim from either side. Dunks the ball with the best of them.”
Here’s what he said about Oglesby:
“Oglesby just keeps getting better. He was absolutely fabulous. He’s got phenomenal range on his jump shot. ”
McCaffery said White was a “little under the radar” as a recruit and compared him with Basabe from a recruiting standpoint. McCaffery said Oglesby can play multiple positions, including the point.
As for his future recruits, McCaffery said he’s going to “bring in athletic ability, size and shooting, not necessarily in that order.”
