This is the third year I’ve done the “Ferentz on” thingie on recruits.

This should be an interesting post with the links from the 2009 and ’10 classes linked on. That’s a pretty good chunk of the football team Kirk Ferentz will have in camp next fall.

Here’s the recap of ’11 class.

You can see the departees here (remember Josh Brown?). You can see the projections that I’ve totally missed on.

‘Ferentz on’ links
  1. Thank you sir for all the effort you put into the recruits links, since I’ve been reading all your posts I really feel closer to my favorite football team. With that being said, have you read Dennis Dodds article @ CBS (http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/story/14693587/mass-transfers-could-be-next-stain-for-ferentz-iowa)??? Is this for real? Are these guys actually talking about transferring? I hope this is a fictional piece or a hypothetical one..have you heard of any of this?

    • I haven’t heard of anyone transferring. The three I would think most likely to transfer of those who were in the hospital are still listed as active students at the UI.

My guess is he didn’t write this without some sort of tip. But that’s purely a guess.

      • Marc,

I have to rib you just a tick here. One thing I have noticed about you amongst all the good things, is you tend to give media types a big ole wide swath and I assume that’s because of your job and your belief in “freedom of speech” and I do the same for people I like, or that “think” like me, or that share MY profession or beliefs.

Now with that said….I can’t buy that….” you don’t get where Denis has got without yada, yada, yada” line……..Again I hope you don’t take offense and you know I regularly give you kudos, but I read some of the tripe guys like him write and he regularly trots out stuff that has little to NO merit.

Honestly this feels like a serious reach on your part or so it seems……so far in just the last 2 months we had a myriad of so-called “credible” sources say there would been “20 plus” suspensions. And Dodd and Doyle and Forde in particular said some VERY strong things that have NOT come to fruition while interjecting gems like “I hope they don’t sign anyone” so I have to ask………R U serious……….isn’t this just a little journalistic courtesy on your part.

And if your answer is “no, he surely has some “source”……. then I’d expect Dennis’ to apologize when his so-called source proves faulty or just “reaching”! I believe you would….!!

See I have a different thought and if I had a radio show in my basement ala “Wayne’s world” I likely prove just the same in that….they have a voice and an opinion and a desire to push an agenda and site traffic. For my part I do NOT go over there anymore and likely wont play college fantasy football there anymore either after 5 years of such.

Finally and I know you’d concur…it would be pretty silly to transfer 4 weeks after the semester got started and spring ball fast approaching. It’s not impossible one or two could still bolt, but in all honesty a couple of those kids have been and will continue to be reserves as Jr’s & Sr’s! Kids who have played a lot but not likely ever as starters, kids who you’d think might be able to transfer and play even IF this thing hadn’t happened yet……no a little applied logic detects a hatchet job at best or wishful “hoping” at worst.

        Chad

        • Chad,

No problem. Always feel free to challenge me. I do not know all the answers and will never try to pretend I do. Sometimes, and I know this isn’t popular in media, “I don’t know” is a valid answer.

This paragraph in your post is key:

“And if your answer is “no, he surely has some “source”……. then I’d expect Dennis’ to apologize when his so-called source proves faulty or just “reaching”! I believe you would….!!”

Let’s wait on this. If nothing comes of it, I think a legion of Hawkeye fans will make its point and then some.

And great point on four weeks into the semester.

May and June is transfer time. But let’s wait on this.

    • And thank you! That’s the whole point of the “Ferentz on” pieces, even if, this year, it really wasn’t Ferentz as much as Eric Johnson.

Three years of these, I think, is a pretty good snapshot of what these guys were going into Iowa.

  2. Some of these guys that write for the “bigger sites” really get me reiled up. Its seems that all they like to do is stir the pot. Makes me appreciate the work that you do for all of us even more. Dont ever recall you forcing your opinions on us, its more like – here it is, what do you think? Very refreshing..ps, can i get my free tickets for ANY home game next year..lol

    • When i start pretending to have all the answers, it’s time to quit.

No tickets, but I am working on getting one of those senior posters with the American flags to give away here.

  3. Good look back Marc. Boy, that 2009 class is starting to look a little leaner than it already was with the departures. Definitely need to hope the guys from the 2010 class continue to develop and this year’s freshman class can come in and help on D.

As for the Dodd story, I hate even mentioning or referring to it but you can probably guess how I feel about Dodd stirring the pot again to make a story. Sources? Dennis don’t need no stinkin’ sources.

    • I don’t know the motive behind the story, but you don’t get where Dennis is by taking shots in the dark.

If no one transfers, then everyone knows that there can be mass transfers. But I’m not sure that was the point of the story.

Who knows. Not sure there’s a lot of there here, but again, I don’t know what Dennis knows.

      • No, you know more. You actually have sources and I’ll leave it at that. I understand your unwillingness to throw a fellow professional (or anyone) under the bus and I can respect that. That’s one of the main reasons I visit this site much to your chagrin I imagine (Marc: “Does this guy every stop talking?!”). LOL

        • You’re always welcome here, Steve.

I think the whole “fellow professional” thing translates to I don’t know what he knows.

I’ve hardly had the market cornered on this story. This one is new to me, though. We’ll see. If no one transfers, I’m sure you guys will remind him and then some.

  4. Thanks again for all the work you do on the write-ups and compilations you put together, Marc. One question though, was there supposed to be a link somewhere in this sentence: “You can see the departees here (remember Josh Brown?)”?

It would be informative to have a list of all the players from the 2009 and 2010 classes that are no longer with us, if for no other reason than to have some fun with depth chart projections and the like. Of course, that might be pointless until after spring ball when some players decide to transfer.

    • The link for the 2009 class is near the bottom of the post, just above the pic of Nico.

Everyone who signed is there from 2009. Also, 2010.

      • I’ll do the leg work for you:

From ’09, I’m seeing the following no longer on the Iowa roster (from the official website):
        Josh Brown
        Tyler Harrell
        Matt Murphy
        Stephane N’goumou
        Anthony Schiavone
Brandon Wegher (actually he’s still listed on the roster, but we know he’s gone)

        From the 2010 class:
        Anthony Ferguson, Jr.
        Austin Gray

  5. i know its really early but have you heard of any possible early commitments for the 2012 class. and about big prospects in iowa this year

    • There are no commitments. For the first, my money might be on Chicago-area DL Tommy Schutt.

Dowling WR Amara Darboh is No. 1 in Iowa. After him, Cedar Falls duo of RB Barkley Hill and WR James Harrington. IC West’s Charles Rogers would be on my list.

Solon’s Jake Morris might be worth a look, too.

I know there’s a big OL that has Iowa’s interest, but I can’t remember the name right now.

  6. Marc,
I have enjoyed you articles very much. I played FB at Iowa in the mid 50s, and believe that this years new class looks “very” good. The best parts are all of the multiple sport guys who seem to have good GPAs and so many are taking really good career paths. I took engineering and it really helped me find a good job at Collins. Keep up the good work.

    • Thanks, Richard!

I think Mike Elgin is now in engineering at John Deere Dubuque. They held a job for him even while he chased the NFL dream for a few years.

Daniel Murray is the next UI football engineer. I think he finished with an MBA, too.
