The wreckage of a plane registered to a Waterloo man has been discovered in Colorado. KRDO-TV says the plane was found at about 4:20 p.m. Monday. The plane, registered to Michael Welton of Waterloo, went missing at about 2:45 p.m. Sunday.
Officials say two bodies were found in the wreckage. They have not been identified.
The piper aircraft was built in 1997, according to the plane's registration. It's not clear if Welton was flying the aircraft.
According to the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Welton is a physician at Northern Iowa Urological Associates. Staff at the office said they have heard his plane went missing, but have no comment because they have no confirmation of anything.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the single-engine Piper Malibu went missing Sunday while flying from the Phoenix area to Pueblo.
Air traffic controllers lost radio and radar contact with the plane after it sent a distress signal.
At the time, the plane was about 8 miles south-southwest of Silver West Airport in Westcliffe, about 50 miles west of the Pueblo airport.
It wasn't immediately clear how many people were aboard. However, initial reports indicated there may have been two people on-board.
