Insight Bowl attendance figure could be deceiving

They're saying the Insight Bowl will have a record-high crowd for its Iowa-Missouri matchup at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.

I don't doubt it. The record is only 49,103. But the announced crowd could be larger than, say, the number of people in the stadium.

Fans who bought advance tickets to the Jan. 10 BCS national title game in nearby Glendale were required to also buy ducats to the Jan. 1 Fiesta and Dec. 28 Insight bowls. What a scam. This excellent Hartford Courant story on the high price Connecticut will pay to play in the Fiesta Bowl has that piece of information and much more.

Iowa will probably take a bit of a bath itself. It is on the hook for 11,000 Insight Bowl tickets. According to this Azcentral.com story, Iowa expects to sell 6,000 of those. Far fewer charter flights are going to this bowl destination from Iowa than the Hawkeyes' previous two, Tampa and Miami. It costs more to fly to Phoenix from Iowa, generally, than Florida.

Ironically, Mizzou could sell more tickets than Iowa. That's ironic because Missouri had a reputation as a school that didn't bring a lot of people to bowls, and it's why 6-6 Iowa State was taken by the Insight Bowl last year ahead of 8-4 Missouri.

Sun Devil Stadium seats 71,706 normally, but only 56,000 for the Insight Bowl because seats in the north end zone are not used.
