IOWA CITY — Sunday night, Iowa running back Jewel Hampton wrote on his Facebook that he was a “former Hawkeye.” Monday evening, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz confirmed.
“Jewel Hampton has decided to leave the team and plans to transfer to another school to complete his degree and finish his career. We wish him the best of success in the future,” said Ferentz.
It got worse for Iowa running backs. Sophomore Adam Robinson, who led Iowa with 941 yards this season, won’t be on the team for the Hawkeyes’ appearance in the Insight Bowl on Dec. 28 in Tempe, Ariz.
The release from Iowa doesn’t say if Robinson has been suspended, but says the Des Moines native “will not be part of the Hawkeye team that makes the trip to Arizona for the Insight Bowl.”
Robinson missed Iowa’s season finale at Minnesota after suffering two concussions within a month. Ferentz said in Monday’s release that he’s been medically cleared to play, but the statement makes it sound as though Robinson is currently not on the team.
“While Adam has been cleared medically, he will not be participating in the upcoming Insight Bowl game as a result of failing to comply with team expectations and policies,” Ferentz said. “Adam will have the option to rejoin the team when classes resume in January.”
Robinson was suspended for the first quarter of the Ohio State game because of “academic indigestion,” Ferentz said.
Ferentz and Iowa athletics director Gary Barta will hold a press conference this morning at 10 in Iowa City to “answer questions,” according to the release.
Rumors have rained down on Iowa football since the arrest of star wide receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos. Johnson-Koulianos, Iowa’s career leader in receptions and receiving yardage, was arrested on six drug charges and for keeping a drug house last Tuesday.
In the wake of Johnson-Koulianos’ arrest, Iowa officials have asked multiple players to undergo drug tests, according to sources.
Players are subject to drug testing several times during their college career. Iowa tests for street drugs as well as performance-enhancers, Iowa Associate Athletics Director Fred Mims said last week. An athlete automatically loses competition time with a failed drug test, Mims said.
Johnson-Koulianos immediately was suspended after his arrest. However, when asked on Friday, Barta declined to rule him out for the Insight Bowl.
“He’s suspended, that’s our statement and I don’t have anything to add to that,” Barta said.
Ferentz told Missouri media in a teleconference last Thursday that “he’ll not play again here.”
The football team isn’t practicing this week because of finals. Players have a meeting Friday.
A couple Iowa players told The Gazette on Monday night that players have heard rumors, but haven’t been told anything about the situation by the coaching staff.
As rumors built Monday, basically every sports book in Nevada took Iowa’s Insight Bowl matchup with Missouri off the board around 4 p.m. Missouri (10-2) had been a 1-point favorite over the 7-5 Hawkeyes. The line moved to 1.5, 2, and in one casino, 2.5 Monday afternoon before it was taken off.
In August, Iowa had a lot of firepower lined up at running back.
Robinson led an 11-2 Iowa team in ’09 with 834 yards. Hampton returned from a torn ACL and called himself Iowa’s “hungriest” player. Also, Brandon Wegher was poised for take off after rushing for 641 yards and eight TDs as a true freshman in ’09, breaking the freshman record of seven TDs set by Hampton in ’08.
One by one, they were either injured or left the team.
Hampton, a 5-9, 210-pounder from Indianapolis, Ind., suffered a torn ACL in the summer of 2009. Then, against Arizona, he suffered a torn ACL in his other knee and missed the rest of the season. He rushed for 577 yards and scored eight touchdowns in two seasons.
In the weeks before Monday’s announcement, Ferentz said Hampton was on track to return in fall ’11.
Robinson, a 5-9, 205-pounder, led Iowa in rushing for the second straight season. Also, he caught 24 passes for 290 yards and a TD. He suffered a concussion against Michigan State and another against Ohio State and ended the regular season on the bench.
On Friday night, Mims told The Gazette that running back Brandon Wegher asked for and received his release to transfer out of Iowa. Wegher, who became a father in November, left the team after the second practice of fall camp and sat out the season for personal reasons. Wegher hasn’t been released to Big Ten schools, but it’s uncertain if that includes Nebraska, which joins the Big Ten next fall.
In response to Hampton’s Sunday night Facebook post, Robinson posted “hmm…. first and for most [sic]… LIVE IT UP!” He’s since deleted that post.
Iowa is down to true freshman Marcus Coker for the Insight Bowl.
Coker played in six games and made three starts. The 6-0, 230-pounder rushed for 403 yards and a TD. He rushed for 129 yards in his first start against Indiana. Against Minnesota, he had 90 yards but fumbled on a late drive in Iowa’s 27-24 loss. Redshirt freshman Brad Rogers, the No. 2 fullback, also is No. 2 at running back.

From Iowa sports info:
HAMPTON TO TRANSFER…ROBINSON TO MISS BOWL GAME
IOWA CITY, IA – Sophomore running back Jewel Hampton has decided to leave the University of Iowa. And, sophomore running back Adam Robinson will not be part of the Hawkeye team that makes the trip to Arizona for the Insight Bowl. The announcement was made today by Head Football Coach Kirk Ferentz.
“Jewel Hampton has decided to leave the team and plans to transfer to another school to complete his degree and finish his career. We wish him the best of success in the future,” said Ferentz.

Hampton, a 5-9, 210-pounder from Indianapolis, IN, has been plagued by injury problems during his three years at Iowa. He has rushed for 577 yards and scored eight touchdowns as a Hawkeye. He was injured in the Arizona game earlier this season and was lost for the season following surgery.
Robinson, a 5-9, 205-pound back from Des Moines, IA, led the team in rushing with 941 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.

EDITOR’S NOTE – There will be no additional comments tonight regarding this release. Head Football Coach Kirk Ferentz and Iowa Athletics Director Gary Barta will hold a press conference tomorrow (Tuesday) morning at 10 a.m. to answer questions. The press conference will be held in the Player’s Auditorium of the Hayden Fry football complex.
I am absolutely starved for any positive news from Hawkeye Football. Every single blurb, tweet, and major news break is either disheartening and/or downright weird. It all seemed to start at the end of the Wisconsin game and accelerated when Demarlo Belcher dropped the game winner in Bloomington. Sigghhhh……
It seems sacrilegious to question KF on well anything regarding change. But with the player defects, lost recruiting commits, and recent trend of going to the NFL as soon as possible, you have to question if there is something wrong with the culture of the team. Are the kids having fun playing football? You would think Iowa would need to change something to kick it over the hump and get to the next level of play. We are competitive in every game, but have never been dominate in any string of games. Only a few dominating wins over the last 5 years, and never more than one game a year of playing to the full potential.
My sense is more news will be coming tomorrow. It isn’t a good sign that the Insight Bowl was taken off the boards in Vegas today. The athletic department will never come and say if someone failed a drug test. I’ve heard two or three different sources name the same people and tell the same story about who won’t be eligible. Usually, when you hear the same rumor from two or three people who aren’t part of a group or friends, it ends up being essentially true.
That said, I can only hope for the best right now. I think the game against Missouri is very winnable and hope we are in a position to compete.
Just because you read the same rumor on multiple message boards doesn’t mean that it has been “confirmed”. Rather you just see people repeating the same rampant speculation while trying to pass it off as “fact”.
Max – I don’t read the kind of message boards you are talking about. No, the stuff I heard yesterday came from season ticket holders and someone with ties to the University. While I hope that Monday’s news that Robinson isn’t playing and Hampton is transferring is the end of it all, I’m not going to be surprised if it isn’t.
Tomorrow will be question and answer nothing more………………..
The leaving early for the NFL is the sign of a good program with a lot of talent……..
I notice the loss of one Wiscy recruit (3-star DB from Texas) to ND didn’t get much play out there. Odd, a kid decommits from an 11-1 team in a BCS bowl to go to 7-5 team, and no one runs the flag up. Much ado about nothing…….
Chad
Hope you’re right that tomorrow is only Q&A. But really probably just Q’s; what can they say? These things are both private matters, and they don’t really want to touch the DJK story with a 10-foot pole. A lot of Ferentz-speak I guess?
Here is the thing Garth,
Why announce these two and then go until tomorrow with more?!?!?!………………..that makes NO sense at all. In fact if that does happen I’ll have to seriously question their damage control people. You announce it all at once and give it a night before you go to questions. Sense I know we all think KF and staff are vague as heck why would they do this…………..they wouldn’t. This is what we have.
And for what it is worth this will help us and our image as much as it will hurt us. In fact I predict it will be used as a tick of a scapegoat and well help us in recruiting.
Chad
Chad,
I think you need to take off the black and gold tinted glasses. While I agree that it is unlikely that more suspensions will be announced tomorrow – or in the future barring some new event – there is no way this is anything but a negative and a black-eye for Iowa. Tomorrow may staunch the bleeding, but real damage has been done and it will be a long time in repairing.
OR – the early defections to the NFL is merely taking advantage of an opportunity when it is presented to you – striking while the iron is hot for YOU, while your “stock” is hot?
think of the poor devils that COULD have gone pro last year, that came back after Iowa’s fluke season thinking that they were going to take part in a magical national championship season this year and REALLY have their “stock soar” and get an even LARGER paycheck, that are now going to go undrafted and be lucky to get a walh-on opportunity… i’ll bet they wish they could go back in time 11 months give or take and cash in…
Agreed, why would they single out Hampton & Robinson if there are more?
Time will only tell what this all means, and even then it’s subjective. A win in two weeks would sure help a lot though.
Garth & Chad,
You can really only talk about what is confirmed. Being in the legal profession, there’s a fine line you’re walking between speculation which throws gas on the blaze, versus confirming what is already set in stone.
Especially what’s at stake here which is millions of possible future earnings.
I guarantee this has a lot of what’s to do with it, or lack thereof really. There’s been a LOT of names implicated in this whole thing. You’ve heard as have I, I’m sure. It’s VERY cliched–but the only thing I can really think of is that “where there’s smoke there’s usually fire”. (I hate to even use that).
This isn’t a chain e-mail telling you every time you repost this Google will send you $100 and write it off as marketing costs. This DJK thing opened up a can of worms–allegedly–the size of Texas. No reason in speculating, and the whole lid has pretty much been ripped off.
If there’s no one else suspended, that’s a good thing. But, just an FYI, the U of I does have at least a 2 strike policy–and it used to be 3 strike policy–that accompanies failing a drug test or refusing one. I can’t say much more than that really. Not that I’m the afficionado of all things Hawkeye–I’ve never claimed to be, but I have good, legit, reliable sources, and it’s just best to let this all play out.
And Chad–I liked your first post–and I don’t know what a tick of a scapegoat is–but please tell me how in the hell this helps recruiting?? Because I wanna know. Right on Max!!! Good call.
Chad, I bleed black and gold too, and even have tattoos to suggest as much, but dude–be reasonable here. Don’t be Rocky Balboa here. If we are–we’re trying to fight off a MAJOR black eye that Ivan Drago just gave us, that could impact everything encompassing Iowa Hawkeyes football for years to come.
GArth & Max are likely right. Tomorrow Ferentz is gonna be like Keanu Reeves in the Matrix dodging bullets and whatnot. Or at least Cam Newton dodging questions left and right like he did @ the Colleg Football awards.
You’ve all seen a Ferentz presser. Or most of you have. This is going to likely be monotone KF for as long as the reporters are there and get sick of hearing, “I can’t really comment on that”…
I mean if “skipping a class” is “academic indigestion”—what do you REALLY think we’re going to draw outta tomorrow’s presser?
Actually Chad—you don’t need to replay to how it would help in recruiting….that might not get shown on the boards anyways. Don’t imply any rumors. Not saying you would or will, so please don’t take that the wrong way, but honestly, the more ambiguous these posts are and the less names they have attached to them the better for now.
Honestly, you’re going to have to find the best spin doctor in America to put the tourniquet over this wound to tell me how recruiting benefits from this at all.
Here’s a recruiting ‘benefit’ – although this is not a situation to recommended as a beneficial course to seek in any way – that might play out this way. It seems like Iowa is willing to pay a price to help its football players not get used up by football but, rather, to insist they ‘use’ football to get something more valuable/ lasting. Let’s see how Tuesday plays out but even if it’s a staggering enforcement of ‘rules with consequences’ there’s something to be said for that. There is so much misinformation flying around – it’s like Hollywood. No one knows nothing around here. What we do know is Kirk Ferentz has shown himself to be a pretty steady hand in all situations. Iowa Football is like a graduate program in Football… the very best graduation rates are in the 80% range. Not everyone completes the program. It’s tough. It’s disappointing. Guys get distracted, etc… Not everyone becomes a fighter pilot out of flight school. Obviously, things could go better across a lot of areas. I tend to agree with Chad and expect the news will reflect good and bad but, mostly, reveal solid leadership. Then, the next thing, will be proving it on the field.
We’ve always been one of the more strict programs when it comes to this. However, I don’t really see where leadership is coming into question here. I think that’s as solid as its always been.
We’ve always been able to take a 2 star player and make him a good TE, LB, DE etc, we have a knack for that. So maybe that’ll open some doors and be a good thing for recruiting. But I don’t see this being a great thing for recruiting at ALL.
I’ll put it this way. There isn’t a program anywhere that isn’t going to have rough performances and situations like this one. The difference is not all have solid leadership in response to such events. I think the press conference is going to reveal and reassert solid leadership. Demonstrate that and there’s a lot less hysteria. And one doesn’t have to go far online to find hysteria these days.
I don’t understand the speculation and impending doom. A star receiver was busted for drugs. Iowa will resort to throwing to 5-6 other receivers. End of that story.
Next story, a back leaves the team. Several players leave college programs every year, and this guy has had two medical leaves. End of that story.
Next story; another back with academic issues.
No it is not good, but has anyone been watching the Missouri Tigers this year?? They had their starting running back leave due to criminal charges, and operate with the student body sharing the rushing duties.
What’s the big rumor??
BTW, Iowa has lost depth, but in my mind they improved the talent. Marcus Coker has the potential of a Shonn Greene. I sat in the rain to wait for his entry to the Ball State game, knowing his abilities. He has looked good as a Freshman!!
Now, the Hawkeyes are waiting the decision of Rodney Coe, another talented running back recruit. Coe should see the light after learning the depth chart just cleared more in his favor. Don’t forget De’Andre Johnson is a redshirt freshman as well.
I’m excited to clean up the program, and move forward.
Mat & enatlanta, have it ferreted out,
Listen I am a debater and negotiator by trade. There are very few things I can’t use as a positive. Any negative press my organization receives, I use it as proof positive of our direct approach to issues and our immediacy to action, and great leadership.
Here is the thing; yes some people will be deterred by this. But those who are “interested” you can use it to your benefit. I’m honestly not a HOMER. There are those in here that know this. I’m not easily duped and I see things fairly clear. When I do miss something I roll in quick and admit my failings.
The anti-thesis to those who would call me a homer is that most people are reactionists. They over analyze the negative and postulate doom, and they over inflate the positive. As for me, I am indeed very high strung and somewhat emotional, but as manager in the car industry and someone with 40 years of good and bad life experiences. I know the good is never as good as it appears and the bad is never as tragic.
This will be a good thing if used in the teaching fashion it should, and based on the amount of kids still coming on their visits; it doesn’t appear to me to be a very big negative. Honestly I’m not even embarrassed by it. Why should I be, all I have to do is turn left or right and it is happening everywhere. More importantly, my life is way more important and long reaching than a few kids on my favorite college team getting in trouble. Honestly if I really cared I should give up sports entirely.
I always say to anyone who is ultra critical of a sports team, whether it be their own or a rival. Prove it………..Stop watching it at all. This is happening every day on every level and if it really bothers you that much prove it and stop supporting these hooligans at all levels. No one wants to do that though. This doesn’t reflect badly on me, it reflects badly on a few morons who made the same mistakes that……….sadly I did. They will recover hopefully and Iowa will be better than fine.
But it doesn’t make me think less of Iowa or KF, and it wont to the kids who want to play for KF.
I have a pretty good history of seeing things pretty clear so by all means disagree with me, but this won’t hurt Iowa much if any.
Chad
Here’s an idea: STOP RECRUTING THUGS. start recruiting special teams players (an area obviously overlooked as of late) and start shoring up the “Lake Delhi – D” and maybe we can start winning some games again….
Oh gee, it’s the no-commonsense guy, coming to spread his brand of joy.
I’ll bet you are disgusted we didn’t have more suspension and a coach leaving eh old friend.
Chad
Ah yes I was wondering what chad ‘the cad’ mcferenz would turn to the ‘no-common sense’ card. I’m am surprised it took you this long. Was wondering if you were feeling OK. Glad to see you were just slow on the draw.
It is well-known that kirk & company have you on their PR team, because it is the blind fans like yourself that don’t see the wheels coming off the bus and thus won’t suggest that incidents like this may be an indication of some cancer much more severe
Or that something is seriously wrong. I know you think 7-5 (soon to be 7-6) seasons are no reason for concern, but if your performance on the job took such a nosedive, you know you’d have one foot on the banana peel in front of an open door and someone whold be getting ready tu push.
The head coch is ultimately responsible for everything that happens on the team, and thus is accountable. Except at iowa where you can earn 4 million to finish in the middle of the pack.
The thing is Claude you were in the same group 3 years ago, and you’ll be in that same group 5 year from now. It isn’t KF or even 7-5, it’s just how you are. You are a bi*(&& and complainer. That’s how people like you get through your lives.
You are an 80%………you grasp at whatever negative buzz you can snag and you run with it. You have no critical thought, no original idea, you follow the anger and hostility and you grasp at what is easy. The wheels come off VERY buss, Claude. Really they do. That’s why they have jacks and spares.
Next year you’ll stay quiet until we lose and then here you’ll come…………………you’ll be the same for the rest of your life, bitter angry and over the top. The coaches will change, the players will change and you’ll still say the same crap. I feel for you, but I won’t say you bother me. I deal with people like you regularly. America sucks, our politicians suck, this sucks…………………I have no doubt there are guys down on LSU’s and Florida’s boards saying the same things……..they’ll have names like Tiger Bob knows or Gator Bill tells all. They are just as bitter, just as dorky and just as petty. They also make just as little sense…………
You guys should get together.
I could probably try a little harder if you weren’t so stubbornly dumb. I have personally told you no less than 15 times Iowa is number 2 in Big 10 wins since 2001 (clearly better than midle of the pack) but you just pretend like you don’t hear it. That alone is worth the money. That has historically been Michigans spot. Now its Iowa’s. Not PSU’s, not Wisconsin’s but Iowa’s. Now close your eyes again!
Ever heard the expression…………stupid is, is stupid does. That’s you and no amount of you closing your eyes makes your theories correct. I had hoped when things didn’t go south like you hoped you’d quit being a fan. Iowa doesn’t need fans like you honestly.
Chad
Still… Number of rose bowls: 0. Number of national championmships: 0. 4 million dollar waste: a 7-5/7-6 season, a program full of thugs (kind of like the NFL team he came from), program in shambles, clearly going the wrong direction losing games on high school mistakes, and you see no cause for concern. Wow. We should all work for you. You’d go broke in a week if your employee return on investment was so pathetic. I know the difference between you and slick-willie clinton now…you obviously inhaled.
