I didn’t realize how close Springville was to Cedar Rapids until I started going to its indoor winter markets.
That’s where I found a great supply of homemade bread, farm fresh eggs, handcrafted cheese, jams, soups and other items, just down the road on Highway 151.
The Springville Economic Development Corp. is sponsoring the winter farmers markets again, starting Saturday, Nov. 13. All markets are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Springville Community Center, 265 Broadway St.
Besides Saturday, other dates will be Dec. 4; Jan. 15 and 29; Feb. 12 and 26; March 12 and 26 and April 9 and 23.
Mount Vernon also has started its winter market season, in City Hall, 213 First St. NW, with the same hours as Springville. The dates, which alternate with Springville’s, are Nov. 20; Dec. 11 and 18; Jan. 8 and 22; Feb. 5 and 19; March 5 and 19 and April 2 and 16.
For those of you at the south end of the Corridor, Iowa City will have an indoor farmers market Saturday, Nov. 13, and Dec. 11, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center, 220 S. Gilbert St. Coordinator Tammy Neumann expects more than 90 vendors at the two markets.
Also, an indoor market will be held monthly at Kirkwood Elementary School, 1401 Ninth St., Coralville. The market, a fund-raiser for the Parent-Teacher Organization, includes small businesses, such as Avon and Tastefully Simple, in addition to handcrafted items, baked goods and local foods. Markets are 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 18; Jan. 15; Feb. 12; March 12 and April 9.
The Urbana Winter Farmers Market will be 9-11 a.m. the second Saturday of the month through March, at the Urbana Community Center, below City Hall. Dates are: Dec. 11; Jan. 8; Feb. 12 and March 12.
Ely’s winter markets will be 8 a.m. to noon at the Ely Public Library, 1595 Dows St. Ali Alldredge tells me that the markets have featured jewelry, eggs, sprouts, jams and jellies, mushrooms, “baked goods galore” and more. This is the first year for a winter market in Ely. Dates are: Nov 6 and 20; Dec 4 and 18; Jan 15 and 29; Feb 12 and 26; Mar 12 and 26; and Apr 9 and 23.
