My preferences: The Outback ONLY if Alabama somehow falls to that game, otherwise the Insight if the opponent is 10-2 Missouri, 10-2 Oklahoma State or 10-3 Nebraska. Sorry, Texas A&M.
The best way to get some juice into this thing for the Hawkeyes, their fans, and poor media saps, is for them to play a team that resonates with people here in Iowa. I could sink my teeth into a game against Alabama. That would probably require South Carolina upsetting Auburn in the SEC title game, kicking Arkansas out of the Sugar Bowl. And ‘Bama still might get grabbed by the Capital One Bowl anyway.
The Gator Bowl? It would be different, I guess, but the opponent would probably be a South Carolina or a Florida, and we’ve seen that movie before.
A bowl against a good Big 12 team would be fun and different for the Iowa program, though. Wouldn’t it be wild if Nebraska lost to Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game and tumbled to the Insight? I would dare say an Iowa-Nebraska matchup would clear some of the toxins from the air about this Hawkeyes season and get people fired up again.
In fact, it would be too good to be true for a Dec. 28 bowl.
An Iowa-Missouri game would be interesting, too. Border states traveling to Arizona to play a game they couldn’t get played in their own backyards, thanks to Mizzou begging out of a contract several years ago.
