Academy offers insight into C.R. police life

I just finished an awesome course called the Citizens Police Academy. The Cedar Rapids Police Department offers it twice a year to interested citizens. It gives you insight into what the department does.

Various members of the force talked to us about their part in the larger organization. We heard from the Bomb Squad, the K9 section, an undercover narcotics agent, the SWAT Team, the Patrol Division, investigators, crime prevention, volunteers, recruiting, internal affairs and others.

We toured the police station and the Linn County Jail. We shot a Glock pistol in the shooting range, observed the communications center, spent three hours in a patrol car and drove a squad car at Hawkeye Downs.

I am recommending this class to you. Itís a view of another world, a very serious one, where the people who live in it are giving a lot of their time and commitment and expertise to keep us safe and to stop crime before it happens.

I applaud the Cedar Rapids Police Department for allowing us to see them at work. My respect and admiration have grown immensely. Thank goodness for the men and women in blue who work to keep us safe.
