The driver of a pickup involved in a fatal accident with a bicyclist in July turned himself in late Thursday.

An arrest warrant had been issued for Robert H. Fleming, 56, of Cedar Rapids, after police could not locate him at two possible addresses. Sgt. Mike Wallerstedt said Fleming came to police headquarters around 11:30 p.m. Thursday after one of his friends heard about the arrest warrant on the news Thursday.

Fleming was charged with failure to yield and no insurance in the July 29 accident on C Street SW that left bicyclist Susan M. DeSotel, of Cedar Rapids, with serious head injuries. DeSotel died four days later.

Details about where Fleming was were not immediately available.

Fleming was transported to the Linn County Jail.

  1. Told you he just didnt know. He wasnt a fugitive on the run

  2. They made it sound like he was a fugitive on the run.

  3. Wait a minute. He was not a fugitive because he didn’t know about the arrest warrant?? What about the fact that he (effectively) killed someone in a hit and run? Sounds like a fugitive (and worse) to me.

  4. You say he wasn’t a “fugitive”? He knew he was “guilty” as sin when he got into his pickup and drove knowing he had no insurance, which by the way is illegal in Iowa. He hit a bicyclist when he turned right in front of a bicyclist who has the same right as other vehicles. Where was he when the news let us know days later that the bicyclist had passed on, she even had a helmet on!
